Title: Tips for using the forum
Post by: John Donovan on July 02, 2013, 09:19:17 AM
How to Upload a Picture from your computer

Please see the instructions for posting "inline" images here:

http://smf.probesoftware.com/index.php?topic=2.msg4040#msg4040

You can also just post images as attachments and then they will show as "thumbnails", but be aware that:

you must be logged in as a user to the forum in order to see any attachments to forum postings!

That is to say, if you are not logged in as a user, you will be able to see the inline images, but not the full attachments at the end of the postings.

Note that your "user name" can be different from your "display name". For example, my user name is "donovan" but my display name is "John Donovan".

Change in your Profile | Account Settings.

Note that "attachments" posted on the topic threads cannot be viewed unless you are a registered member *and* logged in.

Note also that images inserted into your posts using the (https://smf.probesoftware.com/oldpics/i39.tinypic.com/x4kj9x.jpg) code and Tinypic links may be deleted if they are not viewed after 90 days.

To prevent this from happening, simply create an account on Tinypic.com and your image links will never be deleted and you can manage them more easily.

Karen Wright reports that she cannot see the embedded images. She logs in and *can* see the attachments, but still no embedded images.  Might be an issue with accessing Tinypic.com from INL (Idaho National lab)?

Does anyone else have this issue?

By the way, all my embedded images are visible here:

http://tinypic.com/4duljip2

john

Karen reports that Java is disabled on all their INL computers so that may be the problem.

Even if I go directly to the Tinypic website on my INL computer I cannot view the images, possibly due to the fact the INL blocks JAVA.

I can view them on my iphone (even through the INL email that ports to the phone), though from a practical standpoint they are too small.

For me, the user forum is probably best accessed from my home computer.

For some reason when pasting text from another app such as Word or Outlook, the forum sometimes interprets single or double quote characters as an "end of file" or something. I guess I should try and figure out why this occurs!   ???

This will appear to truncate your post at the offending single or double quote character, so if this occurs please try replacing the single or double quote character with a manually typed character in the Post Reply text box.

Edit by John: This problem should be fixed now. Please see this post:

Note that your forum status ("Student, Graduate, PostDoc, Professor and Emeritus") are based on the number of posts you make.

Right now you need 5 posts to get to "Graduate" and 10 posts to get to "Post Doc"!   :)

Best place to start browsing the forum:

If you don't check the forum every day, a good place to start is the "View most recent posts on the forum" link which is located in the lower left corner of the forum main index (just above the "More Stats" link), and accessible from this link:

Some of you may have noticed after posting a message to the forum that every once in a while, the post is truncated. Usually at some special character such as a hyphen, double quote or apostrophe.

Why is this?  Well the Simple Machine Forum (SMF) software that runs this site can only handle basic ASCII characters. So for example if you copy and paste text from a Microsoft Word document and the text includes Microsoft's "smart quote" characters, the forum software will end the post right there.

At first I didn't believe this could be true, but after some searching on the net, it appears be be the case.

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Why_do_I_have_partially_blank_or_missing_text_in_posts

Therefore the best solution is to always paste the text into a text editor such as NotePad or TextPad, and then re-copy and paste from there to the forum.

If you forget and see your post has missing text, simply click the "back" button on your browser and you should be able to see the original text with the offending character(s) in your post. Simply copy the entire post in the clipboard (<ctrl> c), go to the forum topic and click the Modify button to re-paste the text and this time edit the non ASCII characters before clicking Save.

Edit by John: after conversion of forum database to UTF-8, this is no longer a problem.

The forum search field is now case insensitive which should help find items of interest more easily. To access *advanced* search, just click the Search button with an empty search field and then click this link:

and you will get this Advanced Search page:

As many of you know, I've used TinyPic to "host" the "in-line images" when I post a short tutorial or message to the forum.

However, as some may have noticed every once in a while, TinyPic screws up and one of my images get "appropriated" by another Tinyic account. No one at TinyPic seems to understand why this occurrs.

So first, if you come across a post in this forum and one of the pictures seems to be off-topic, out-of-place or otherwise inappropriate, please send me a private email or personal message through the forum so I can repair the incident.

Second, I haven't done this yet, but apparently a better image hosting site is PhotoBucket, but I haven't had a chance to investigate it.  Please feel free.

As you may know, the forum software attempts to reject membership requests from known spammer IP addresses, but as it's an "arms race" as they say, some spammers do slip through.

Then I need to try an ascertain if the membership request is legitimate or a spammer.  I can check the email address and IP address using some search tools, but sometimes it is difficult to determine whether a specific membership request is a real person interested in our forum or simply a spammer.

If you have attempted to join our forum and not had a reply back, it may be because I could not determine from your hotmail or gmail account if you are a real person or not.  If you haven't had a membership request approved and you would like to join, I would first suggest that you try to register using your university or corporate email address.  No other members (except the forum administrators) will see your actual email address, and we should be able to approve you right away.

If that doesn't work, please contact me directly by email and provide your name, professional affiliation and your reason for joining the forum. That should be enough information for us to determine that you are a real person.

I can also not see the embedded images. But at least I now know it isn't just me not able to "read between the lines." We get blocked from a lot of obscure things here, though.

Hi Katherine,
I have heard from a couple of the nuclear sites that use our Probe for EPMA software, that indeed, TinyPic is blocked by their IT people.  You might be able to get your IT department to allow it for a specific IP, that is your specific computer.

A few people have contacted me at my donovan@probesoftware.com email and said that they never got "approved" to join the user forum.

I am very sorry about this, but we get about a dozen attempts to "spam" the user forum every day, and sometimes from the email address alone it is difficult to determine who the "bad guys" are.

So, if this has happened to you, either please try again to register on the forum, this time using your professional email address, or contact me directly and let me know who you are and I will approve your membership right away.

Thanks.

This is just a reminder that members should utilize the built-in picture gallery for "in-line" images when posting on the Probe Software user forum.

I originally used TinyPic for image hosting on the user forum, but I found that even with a "registered" TinyPic account, these images occasionally got overwritten by some other TinyPic user's random image, e.g., someone's pet dog!

I've detected that at least two images in the user forum are hosted on TinyPic (see attached images below so you'll know who you are!), so please move them to the user forum gallery as described here:

http://smf.probesoftware.com/index.php?topic=2.msg4040#msg4040

The other reason to move your on-line images from TinyPic is that some labs (e.g, Idaho National Lab) are blocked from TinyPic, so those users will not be able to see your in-line images if they are hosted on TinyPic.

Thanks!
john

I should mention that all registered members should feel free to create new topics on the appropriate board whenever they want to.

That said, we should all probably check using the search field in the upper right, if the topic already exists!  With over 400 topics on the user forum, it is very possible that someone has already created a topic for your post.  If a search of the user forum does not reveal a closely related topic, then by all means, please feel free to create a new topic for your new post.

Some new forum members have asked why is it that when they join the forum their status is listed as "Student".   Mind you, there's nothing wrong with being a "student":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student%27s_t-distribution

I still consider myself a student, because I am always learning something new!  In any case this forum profile listing merely reflects your forum status, not your real world status!  Note that your forum status ("Student, Graduate, PostDoc, Professor and Emeritus") are based on the number of posts you make.

Right now you need 5 posts to get to "Graduate" and 10 posts to get to "Post Doc"!   :)

Just a reminder for those that didn't know.   When you use the search field in the upper right of the forum page, please note that you are not limited to a single search term.  For example you can type in:

TDI incubation glass

and you will get hits for all those terms, and the results will be sorted by number of hits.  Once you have search results, one can type in more search terms to narrow down the results further.  One can also start ones search in a specific board or topic and only those results from that board or topic will be returned.

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/search

There is also an "Advanced Search" option available that you can access by just clicking the Search button with nothing entered.

The Internet never stands still.

When we first started using this user forum, and someone wanted to display an in-line image in their post, they had to host the image somewhere on the Internet and link to it from their post. Many of us utilized the site TinyPic which offered a free image hosting site. And yes as with most free things it turned out to be "too good to be true"!

The first problem I had with TinyPic was when I started noticing that some of the TinyPic images that I had posted previously seemed to be getting randomly replaced by an image of someone's boyfriend or cat.  This was really irritating as you can imagine!  I had even gone to the trouble to make an account on TinyPic because they stated that your images would be permanently saved if you created this account (I guess so they could harvest your email address!). At that time I even contacted TinyPic and complained but got no response.

So Probe Software started looking for a solution and one of our consultants showed us that the Simple Machines Forum software we are using for this user forum did provide a free image gallery plugin that we could have installed.  After some considerable effort we got the image gallery software installed, and I managed to grab all the images of mine I could find that were still left on TinyPic and moved them over to a folder on the Probe Software site where they would be safe from being randomly replaced by photos of boyfriends and cats!

Now it's even worse as some of you may already have noticed. TinyPic has shut down their image hosting site saying: sorry!  And in the place of any image links we now see this instead:

Anyway, if you've ever used TinyPic to host your in-line images on the Probe Software user forum, you might want to check your older posts and see if any of your image links are broken. And if they are broken but you still have those images saved locally on your computer, please utilize the user forum image gallery instead and then edit your posts as described here:

http://smf.probesoftware.com/index.php?topic=2.msg4040#msg4040

It's sad that these images which so many people thought were worth uploading and linking to have all been deleted from the TinyPic site, but hopefully you all have the original image files and can fix these broken image links in this user forum.

Let us also add an additional point about membership requests.

Sometimes we get a request to join the user forum from someone with what appears to be a valid email address, but the IP address appears unrelated to the email address.

Because this could be a spammer "spoofing" someone's email address, we usually approve the membership request, but require that you activate the membership using the provided email address. We do this by sending an activation email to the email address provided.

Most of the time, the prospective member sees this activation email, and clicks the link and everything is golden, but occasionally this activation email is missed, or ends up in the prospective member's spam folder.

If we don't see the membership activated in a week or so, we usually follow up with a reminder to check for this email.  But sometimes even that doesn't work!

So if you tried to join the EPMA user forum in the past, and wondered why you newer got "approved", this is most likely the reason.   So please try again, preferably using your professional email address, but also be sure to check your spam folder for the activation email!

Here's a forum tip that some of you may not know about. This can be especially handy if you've haven't looked at the forum in a while and wondered what has been going on since you last visited.

Just scroll to the bottom of the main forum page and then click on this link:

Please note that when using the search feature (located in the upper right of the forum web pages), the search will only search the currently listed boards or topics (and sub topics).

Therefore if you want to restrict your search to the, say the CalcImage board only, simply click on that board before typing in your search term.  If you want to limit your search to a specific topic in a specific board, again, browse to that topic before entering your search terms.

To search for literal strings use double quotation marks.

Some of you may have noticed that the in-line image display is different in the new SMF forum software v2.1.4.

It turns out that the image click to toggle between a scaled image and the full size image feature was removed in SMF 2.1.x. And instead, the image automatically displays at 80% of the post width up to the actual image size at a 1:1 pixel scale as the browser window is increaed.

But what we saw at first is that the images never displayed above 512 pixels. Apparently in our transition to the new SMF v. 2.1.4 forum software, the maximum image width/height got set to 512 pixels. The default is 0 for no limit, but we now set it to 2028. So now you can resize your browser window to see the image better.

One more tip. You can force the displayed size of the image to a fixed size in the BBC code of the in-line image. For example, in this post of Ben Buse's there is no defined limit for the images:

https://smf.probesoftware.com/index.php?topic=1674.msg12862#msg12862

The image BBC code is this:

And, the image display automatically scales up to full size based on the window size. But in this other post of his:

https://smf.probesoftware.com/index.php?topic=1674.msg12861#msg12861

The maximum width/height is specified in the BBC code like this:

And the image is constrained to that specified maximum width/height.

So that means you can have the image scale with window size automatically up to 2048 pixels (the default).  Or you can optionally specify a maximum image size using the specified width/height parameters in the BBC code.

Here's a new "feature" everyone should be aware of now that we've updated the forum software from 2.0.x to 2.1.x:

In the older forum software if you wanted to paste in a column of numbers, say from an analysis and you wanted the columns to stay lined up, we utilized the [Tt] tag, which meant "Text" apparently.

But this tag no longer is supported in the new forum software, so we tried using the Courier New font, because we had (wrongly) assumed that it was an issue of proportional vs. non-proportional fonts.  It wasn't!

The issue is that apparently, the our various browsers takes it upon itself to add or remove spaces as it sees fit for whatever reason.  In these scenarios you would paste in your columns of numbers, and the text would look fine.  But then you saw a typo and so you edit something else (not even within the columns of numbers), and all of a sudden your columns of numbers are all misaligned.

The solution is to use the preformat tag (Preformatted button) as shown here:

Then you should be OK.

To fix messed up columns of numbers you can select your text using the More | Modify or Quick Edit buttons and remove/insert spaces as necessary to get the columns to line up again and then surround the columns of numbers with preformated tags like this:

[pre] text here  [/pre]

Note that some of our forum boards, for example "Laboratory Management" and "JEOL vs. Cameca" are only visible if you login using your forum login and password.

Forum members who login can also see attachments to posts, so please join our EPMA forum when you get a chance using the Login or Signup links at the top of the main forum page.
