They were getting frayed and corroded.

More general question - do modern carbon rod evaporators - in particular large bell jar evaporators - have safety cut-offs to prevent overheat if high current operated for to long.

Our ancient Edwards 306A has a breaker trip (red button) for over current protection.  I don't know about modern carbon coaters.
