Proper Assignment of MACs.....MAC30 for PAP

Something I have been looking for finally showed up under my nose, in the "Green Book" (1991 Electron Probe Quantitation, ed  Heinrich and Newbury).

The question I had was, Which MACs were the ones that Pouchou and Pichoir used when they developed the  PAP matrix corrections? As some people know and some may not, you cannot just swap MACs between any matrix corrections, as usually one specific matrix correction may have been tweaked using one specific set of MACs.

I learned on page 40 "The absorption coefficients associated with the PAP procedure are those of the model of MAC 30 of Heinrich except for very light emitters (Z<10); for these the coefficients are read from a table...." They show then in Appendix 5 a supplementary table of additional macs.

Interesting. As you probably know, the MAC30 coefficients are available in PFE from the Analytical | ZAF, Phi-rho-z, Alpha Factor and Calibration Curve Corrections menu from the MACs button.

In fact you should also know that one can compare MACs from all the available MAC tables in CalcZAF from the Xray | Display MAC Emitter Absorber Pair menu. Here is an example of the output for Mg Ka in Fe (an relatively important binary for geology!):

MAC value for Mg Ka in Fe =    5239.40  (LINEMU   Henke (LBL, 1985) < 10KeV / CITZMU > 10KeV)
MAC value for Mg Ka in Fe =    6120.70  (CITZMU   Heinrich (1966) and Henke and Ebisu (1974))
MAC value for Mg Ka in Fe =    5395.10  (MCMASTER McMaster (LLL, 1969) (modified by Rivers))
MAC value for Mg Ka in Fe =    5518.65  (MAC30    Heinrich (Fit to Goldstein tables, 1987))
MAC value for Mg Ka in Fe =    6089.53  (MACJTA   Armstrong (FRAME equations, 1992))
MAC value for Mg Ka in Fe =    5089.56  (FFAST    Chantler (NIST v 2.1, 2005))

In fact the use of the Heinrich (CITZMU) table is one reason why we sometimes see high totals in garnet, etc.

Finally, also check the Analytical | Empirical MACs menu for experimentally determined MACs from the literature that can be selected to "overwrite" the MAC table values in analysis:
